Kempton Place features an array of fascinating sculptures that decorate the development. According to artist Francois Visser, Kempton Place gave him the opportunity to change an urban landscape into an interesting environment that speaks of concepts such as empowerment, freedom and dream-like worlds.
The Anthony Gormley inspired figures reflect all our greatest fears and our most secret aspirations. All people strive to be empowered, as it gives us a sense of accomplishment and freedom. As swimming gives us freedom, it also requires effort and it is this sense of continuous effort that tires us in our daily lives. It is this playful contrast that makes this landscape so interesting. The figures are meant to rather bring across the feeling of serenity and piece – an image that will help people escape from the realities of life. Some figures are half embedded into the ground while others give a surprise element by staring down at us like gargoyles at the Sacre Coeur in Paris. Francois Visser intended these figures not to be an exhibit of high art on pedestals but rather for them to transform the landscape into a dreamworld where freedom is a true reality.
Visser made use of bronze and concrete as mediums for these figures. Both these mediums are sustainable and easy to maintain, but, most importantly, it is tactile mediums that can be touched and experienced by all. The over-exaggerated sizes of the figures further emphasize the idea of dream-like figures that float around in our daily surroundings.
